Overnight train from Bengaluru, arriving Ernakulam mid-morning. Walk Fort Kochi in the afternoon — the Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church, Jew Town and the spice markets — with a Kathakali performance in the evening.

Drive down to Alappuzha and board the houseboat by noon. The afternoon is spent cruising the Kuttanad channels with lunch cooked on board, mooring in the middle of Vembanad lake for dinner and a night on the water.

Sunrise was worth the 4 am start. Everything from pickup to drop was on schedule and the WhatsApp group before the trip made it easy to settle in.
